Shepparton Art Museum – Case Study

Designed by internationally renowned architects Denton Corker Marshall, the new Shepparton Art Museum will be a five-storey building housing the Museum, Visitor Centre, and the Kaiela Art Gallery and Studio.

About the Project: The new Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) building will be an outstanding example of exciting, best-practice contemporary museum architecture designed by one of Australia’s leading architects on a remarkable site in regional Victoria.

Designed by internationally renowned architects Denton Corker Marshall, the new Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) will be a five-storey building housing the Museum, Visitor Centre, and the Kaiela Art Gallery and Studio. The 5,300m2 building will also house a café and event space, with a roof top viewing deck.

A 33m x 33m cube-like form, the new Museum is located on the south-eastern corner of Victoria Park Lake to maximise SAM’s greatest asset, the park setting.

Four L-shaped plates, each of different heights, make up the building’s façade. Each plate is of a different metallic finish; low sheen zinc to the southern approach; matt soft charcoal above the entry to SAM on Wyndham Street; metallic mid-grey facing the park; and rich ochre-red corten steel facing the lake and river plain

Overview of the project: Cassaform were engaged to design and supply the formwork and protection system to safely form the primary RC core. The shutter system comprised of 5.5m high modular shutters with self-stripping internal corners that were formed off each newly constructed slab or the internal protection deck as designed. Cassaform also provided engineering sign off reports and technical support throughout the project delivery.

Key Features: The construction involved numerous in-situ concrete vertical elements and post-tensioned slabs.

About the product: The P300 Modular Formwork System is suitable for casting in-situ walls or any vertical structure on site. The P300 Formwork panels are simple, strong, and sturdy. Thanks to their modularity they are suitable both for small medium-size sites and for large projects to build shear walls, retaining walls, shafts, columns, abutments, and piers. Advantages include:

  • Reduces material and outlay, giving you a cost certainty and site efficiency
  • Extremely versatile – can be used for a in different ways with different accessories
  • Can be specially designed for bigger project
  • Personnel can perform all operations on the ground without the need to climb
  • Quick handling/dismantling of panels on-site

The Cassaform internal protection decks are a fully mobile platform which is assembled inside the shaft at the ground level and can then be progressively lifted during the shaft casting process to ensure ultimate worker safety and protection at all times. The shaft protection system consists of standard components which can be assembled to suit almost any shaft size and can also be used to as temporary support platform inside the shaft to support formwork during the climbing process.
