History of acrow props

The props was invented by Swiss-born man called William de Vigier who came to England in 1935. William designed the adjustable prop when he recognised that traditionally builders would cut a specific size timber prop to fit for each job and application. The break for William’s adjustable props came when his props was adopted by a few large builders in London. By 1939, over 40,000 Acrow props were in use in the construction industry.

William de Vigier’s company was named the Acrow Group, after his solicitor Mr A. Crowe. He adopted this name as, like Kodak, it was an easily pronounceable and it also had an added advantage that it also appeared early in alphabetical lists.

What is an acrow prop?

An Acrow Prop is a piece of construction equipment. It is a telescopic tubular steel prop, used as a temporary support in the building and construction industry. It typically has a built in screw jack system which can be extended and reduced to fit varies heights.

Outside Australia an Acrow prop may also be known as a jack post, adjustable post, telescoping prop, screw jack, adjustable steel column, adjustable steel prop, adjustable metal prop, as well as an adjustable shoring post.

Acrow Props in Australia generally come in the following standard sizes and capacities

  • Size 0 – Height Range 1050mm to 1850mm – Capacity Range 42.5kN to 23kN
  • Size 1 – Height Range 1600mm to 2800mm – Capacity Range 34.0kN to 13kN
  • Size 2 – Height Range 1900mm to 3400mm – Capacity Range 39.0kN to 11kN
  • Size 3 – Height Range 2170mm to 3975mm – Capacity Range 35.5kN to 7.5N
  • Size 4 – Height Range 3100mm to 4900mm – Capacity Range 21.0kN to 6kN

Note – Extreme caution should be used when ordering acrow props for a particular application because unfortunately cheaper imported products made from lower grade steel are also available which may significantly lower capacities. Please request capacities from your supplier.

The working safe load for a given prop varies according to the distance between its ends and the eccentricity of the load relative to the longitudinal axis of the prop. The longer the prop is extended the lower the safe working load of the prop is. Eccentric loads can also reduce the capacity of props significantly.

What kind of jobs are acrow props suitable for?

Acrow props are mostly used for shoring: temporary supports during building repair or alteration work. A typical application for an acrow prop which the acrow prop is synonymous for use is to support an existing horizontal beam when its original masonry supports are removed or repaired. When masonry itself is to be supported, holes are first knocked through the brickwork and a ‘needle’ or ‘strongboy’ is placed through the hole. A pair of Acrow props are then used, one under each end. Existing windows or doorways may be supported directly, or via needles.

The base and top plate of Acrow props are quite small and generally measure at 150×150 steel plate, so they are suitable for supporting a vertical loads but are at risk of toppling if there is any lateral or sideways load. In the event that side load exists then the props should be braced to increase stability.

Steps involved in erecting an Acrow prop

Acrow props are adjustable in height in two ways: The first adjustment is via a loose pin through a series of holes in the inner tube which gives a wide range of coarse adjustments. The second form of adjustment comes through a large diameter screw jack thread formed on the outside of the tube itself which allows finer height adjustment over a short range. The screw thread also allows the props to be tightened when already in place and to adjust the load that each acrow prop takes.

Extra Accessories available for acrow props?

Acrow props are generally a self-contained and complete item within themselves however acrow props can be used with other standard accessories and components. For example:

  • Base & Top Plates – usually a timber sole board and timber sleeper to help distribute the point load created by the acrow prop on the bearing surface(s)
  • Steel tube and fittings used to laterally cross brace the props to prevent sideward movement.
  • Strongboys used to needle through existing masonry walls
  • Steel or timber beams required to support and distribute the load

 

What are the transport requirements?

As mentioned above Acrow props come in variety of different sizes. Consequently their unit weight also varies from approximately 13kg to 30kg each. Transportation requirements of Acrow Props will be dependent on size and quantities required for your project therefore can vary from a small utility vehicle right through the semi-trailers.
